Members of the Estonia-Armenia Parliamentary Friendship Group of the Riigikogu, the Parliament of Estonia, express their deepest condolences to the people of Armenia over the massacre that took place in the Azerbaijani city of Sumgait in 1988, during which civilians, including women, children and the elderly, were killed.
We are deeply convinced that violence is not a solution to problems. The issue of the status of Nagorno-Karabakh can be resolved only peacefully and through diplomatic means.
In order to achieve progress, it is very important to resolve humanitarian issues, especially the immediate and unconditional return of prisoners of war. Resolving of humanitarian issues as well as avoiding hostile rhetoric are the first and necessary steps for creating an atmosphere of trust and peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
The Statement is signed by Raivo Tamm, Mihhail Lotman, Mati Raidma, Tarmo Kruusimäe and Paul Puustusmaa.
