On 18–21 May, the Chairman of the National Defence Committee of the Riigikogu (Parliament of Estonia) Marko Mihkelson and members of the Committee Ants Laaneots and Johannes Kert are on a visit to Kiev, where they will meet their colleagues from the Verkhovna Rada (Parliament) of Ukraine and visit the military training centre in Desna near Kiev.
According to Mihkelson, the purpose of the visit is to express support to the Ukrainian colleagues and to declare Estonia’s continuing support for Ukraine in carrying out the necessary reforms.
“Each success in Ukraine is an achievement both for us and for the whole free world,” Mihkelson said. “The strengthening of Ukraine as a free and democratic state based on the rule of law has an immense impact on the security of the whole Europe.”
Mihkelson said that during the visit they want to get an overview of the current security and economic situation in Ukraine. The issues of bilateral defence cooperation and various assistance programmes of Estonia will also be discussed.
In Kiev the members of the National Defence Committee will meet with the representatives of the Committee on National Security and Defence and the Committee for Foreign Affairs of the Verkhovna Rada.
They will also have meetings with the representatives of the Ministry of Defence and Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Security Service of Ukraine SBU and the National Security and Defense Council.
In addition to that, it is also planned to meet with the Deputy Chief Monitor of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) Special Monitoring Mission to Ukraine and visit Desna military training centre near Kiev.
