President of the Riigikogu (Parliament of Estonia) Eiki Nestor will take part in the joint visit of the speakers of the parliaments of the Nordic Countries and the Baltic States to Ukraine. During the visit, it is planned to meet with the President, the Prime Minister and the Speaker of the Parliament of Ukraine.
“The Nordic Countries and the Baltic States cooperate actively at various levels. The cooperation between the speakers of parliaments is also active, for many years we have focused on our relations and cooperation with the countries that are at the crossroads with regard to their future,” Eiki Nestor said.
The President of the Riigikogu said that the final decisions regarding their future will naturally be made by these nations themselves. “The only thing we can do is helping them in this. For instance, using the three Baltic States as an example by explaining what we did, why we did it and how we did it, and where we have arrived,” Nestor added. “Due to our similar history, we are maybe better able to make their ideas understandable to our allies in Europe. But this is possible only when we meet and have an honest talk.”
On Monday, the speakers of the Nordic and Baltic parliaments will meet with Chairperson of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Volodymyr Groysman and Prime Minister of Ukraine Arseniy Yatsenyuk. They will also give a press conference and have meetings with the representatives of the deputy factions of the Ukrainian parliament.
On Tuesday, the speakers will meet with the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko, special representative of the President in Crimea Mustafa Dzhemilev and the representative of the Crimean Tatars Refat Chubarov. The speakers of the Nordic and Baltic parliaments will also be given an overview of how the NGOs help the people in the regions devastated by war.
