The Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Riigikogu Marko Mihkelson stressed at the Inter-Parliamentary Conference for the Common Foreign and Security Policy and the Common Security and Defence Policy in Riga that the EU must not relieve sanctions against Russia until the territorial integrity of Ukraine is restored.

Mihkelson also said, addressing the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini, that the European Union has to be of one mind not only in words, but also express it in actions.

Mihkelson emphasised that the European Union was not established in order to be against somebody, but we have to be ready to defend our principles by all means available. “Unfortunately Russia’s aggression in Ukraine continues, and this forces us to enhance our diplomatic efforts together,” the Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee said.

Mihkelson also spoke about the approaching Eastern Partnership Summit in Riga, and stressed that all national parliaments of the EU can make their contribution to the success of the summit by ratifying the association agreements with Moldova, Ukraine and Georgia. “By today, only half of the Member States have done that,” he added.
