Today, the Riigikogu (Parliament of Estonia) deliberates the matter of significant national importance “Sustainable development of national military defence”, initiated by the National Defence Committee.
Chairman of the National Defence Committee Enn Eesmaa, Minister of Defence Kalle Laanet, Commander of the Defence Forces Lieutenant General Martin Herem and Director of the International Centre for Defence and Security Indrek Kannik present reports at the sitting.
Chairman of the National Defence Committee Enn Eesmaa emphasised that Estonia’s military defence is based on independent defence capability and solid allied relations built on the will to defend.
In his report, he speaks about regional cooperation, which means daily communication first of all with Estonia’s closest neighbours Latvia and Lithuania as well as with the Nordic Countries in the NB8 format. The military capabilities of the Defence Forces and Estonia’s defence spending level is also discussed. Other topics include the presence in the Arctic and the increasing tensions between the great powers the USA, Russia and China.
The sitting begins at 10 a.m., and will be streamed live on the Riigikogu home page and on ETV2.
