Today, the Riigikogu started the second reading of the Bill on Amendments to the State Pension Insurance Act and Other Associated Acts (652 SE), initiated by the Government, which was adjourned due to the end of the working hours of the sitting of the plenary assembly. According to the Bill, the pensionable age will be equal for men and women and it will rise by three months every year as of 2017, to 65 years. In the opinion of the initiator, the purpose of the Act is to ensure adequacy and sustainability of the pension system. The Act imposes an obligation of analysis on the Government according to which the Government has to prepare by 2019 an analysis concerning the effect of the old-age pension age provided in this Act on the financial and social sustainability of the pension insurance system and, where necessary, submit a proposal to the Riigikogu on alteration of the old-age pension age provided in § 7 of this Act or establishing of a flexible old-age pension age. The discussion will continue with questions to the presenter at the additional sitting of the Riigikogu on 23 March at 6 p.m.
